Note: On January 11th, 2025, through Director Shi Jian’s 时间 introduction, I had the honor to meet three esteemed filmmakers: Chen Jue 陈爵, Wang Zijun 王子军, and Kuang Yang 邝杨. I subsequently conducted an interview with all four directors. In our conversation, the four of them reflected on the founding of the SWYC (Structure. Wave. Youth. Cinema) Working Group 结构.浪潮.青年.电影 工作小组 in 1989, their modes of working within official television stations during the early years of the Reform and Opening period, and their engagement with and reflections on early television technologies. As witnesses to the New Chinese Documentary Movement, they also discussed their 1991 composition of the Manifesto of the New Documentary Movement 新纪录片运动宣言. This article presents selected extracts from that interview.
