We are pleased to help publicise the launch of PERSONAL CINEMA FROM CHINA season, of which CIFA is a partner. PERSONAL CINEMA FROM CHINA includes 3 cinema screenings (inc. UK premiere of Leap of Faith) and 7 rarely seen films that will be streaming online, from 24 OCT. – 19 Dec. 2024. Two films by director Lina Yang, Spring Tide and Leap of Faith will be screened at the ICA, London on Thursday 17 October at 6:30 pm and 8:45pm. A second screening of Leap of Faith is scheduled for Friday 18 October at 6:30pm. Tickets are available on the ICA website at https://www.ica.art/films.
The selection presents the works from established Chinese indie directors as well as artist and amateur filmmakers. Produced between 2010 and 2023, they offer an urgent and often raw insight into the issues of personal struggles, family conflicts, belonging and social justice. The title of the season suggests a personal and matter-of-fact-approach that the filmmakers have taken to place themselves in front of the camera or simply turn it outside to record the old home (lao jia), reflecting on the psychological difficulty of positioning themselves in relation to China’s rapid transformations and urbanisation.
PERSONAL CINEMA FROM CHINA is curated by Dr. Wifak Gueddana as part of her MA in Film Studies, Programming and Curation at the NFTS. It is also the first series of seasons and films for streaming presented by First-Person Film, an online initiative for the curation of personal films from China, Japan, South Korea and other countries in East Asia.
