Synopsis
A group of documentary filmmakers and independent reporters accidentally find something that Hong Kong people do not know, but which affects them significantly. They investigate the matter by using their cameras. As they approach the truth, danger beckons.This is not simply a documentary produced by one person, the audience is invited to complete it. Before and after the handing-over of the sovereignty to China, Hong Kong people have been living in a sense of political insecurity. ‘The Aqueous Truth’ attempts to use a documentary style to provoke and explore this feeling.
Director biography
Chan Tze-woon is a director and writer, born and raised in Hong Kong and currently based in Taiwan. His work explores personal memory, collective identity, and the shifting boundaries between documentary and fiction. His films have been selected for major international festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, New Directors/New Films in New York, BFI London Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival.
His first feature-length documentary, ‘Yellowing’ (2016), captures the urgency and impact of the 2014 Hong Kong occupation movement, and received the Shinsuke Ogawa Prize at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. His second feature, ‘Blue Island’ (2022), is a hybrid of documentary and re-enactment, winning Best Feature Documentary at Hot Docs and Best Documentary Feature at CAMM Fest in San Francisco. His works have also been nominated twice for the Taipei Golden Horse Awards.
He is a member of the Asia Pacific Screen Academy and the Documentary Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and an alumnus of Berlinale Talents, Talents Tokyo, and Berlin AiR.
